Management Database Unveiling the Mask of Gray Literature

Lecture for the 2009 Winter Meeting of the Transportation Research Board,
Flagstaff, Arizona

by David S. Clarke, DelDOT Archaeologist

2009

The Delaware Department of Transportation Archaeological Website has taken a methodological leap by providing the public and academic communities access to all their archaeological reports, along with a searchable database that allows the user to define the parameters of a search. This new database will permit archaeologists to sort through hundreds of reports, by a number of criteria, such as county, time period, and specific code words culled from the reports such as Mills, Bridges, or Archaic. The end result of this database is a more streamlined approach to doing research, along with being able to access gray literature that formally may have been avoided.
