President's Day Weekend Storm Dubbed "The Beast of the East" Pounds Delaware on February 15, 16, and 17, 2003


One of the largest winter storms in history pounded the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast February 15 - 17, 2003. Delaware was hardest hit on Saturday and Sunday, February 15 and 16th. Snowfall amounts ranged from 13 to 21+ inches with drifts from 3 to 5 feet reported in many areas. Delaware Governor Ruth Ann Minner declared a State of Emergency on February 16th. Crews were prepared prior to the onset of the storm. The snow plow assault continued on the major Delaware arterials during the storm and was able to progress to the State-Maintained Developments and Subdivision Streets by Wednesday, February 19th.
