Summer Transportation Institute

The Summer Transportation Institute (STI) is a four week program sponsored by the Federal Highway Administration and the Delaware Department of Transportation.  It's administered through Delaware State University, Business Management Department.  The program is geared toward 9th through 11th Graders and is designed to spark an interest in transportation careers.  In addition to studying core subjects, such as math, science, technology, and PSAT Prep, students study air, land, sea and rail transportation.  This year a new twist was added where the students actually worked on a project, the West Dover Connector.   They were broken into teams and asked to solve a problem throughout the four weeks of the program.  Each week students were given information, which was built upon the following weeks and inceased in complexity.  The outcome was better than expected and in fact, the Department got some good ideas that hadn't been considered.  Because of this, we are considering including youth representation in future Working Groups.

This was the 9th year.  It's usually held mid-June through mid-July, give or take a week.  We usually visit schools, talk to school counselors to get students that are genuinely interested in transportation as a career.  Former Institutes were 4 week programs where the students stayed on campus.  This year, the format was changed to where the students commuted daily.  At the end, they received awards and, many of them have asked to intern with us next year.

Only the first 20 students who meet the criteria of having a 2.5 Grade Point Average and competitive SAT scores will be accepted into the program. Students also have to have 3 letters of recommendation, of which one must come from their high school counselor, as well as send a writing sample.
