US Senator William V. Roth, Jr. Bridge Ceremony


William V. Roth, Jr. Bridge On July 9, 2007 U.S. Senators Joseph Biden and Thomas Carper, along with Congressman Michael Castle, DelDOT Secretary Carolann Wicks, and Judge Jane Roth, widow of former Senator Roth gathered together along the banks of the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal to celebrate the dedication of the U. S. Senator William V. Roth, Jr. Bridge. The bridge, formerly named the C&D Canal Bridge was re-named by the U.S. Congress in honor of one of Delaware's most beloved and longest-serving elected officials, the late Senator William V. Roth.

The Chesapeake & Delaware Canal was completed in 1829. The U. S. Senator William V. Roth, Jr. Bridge was opened to traffic on December 9, 1995 after 1,230 days of construction. The cable-stayed bridge cost $58 million to construct is 4,650 feet long and features a 750-foot deck surface that crosses the canal. Today, the bridge has an annual average daily traffic count in excess of 70,000 vehicles.
