On July 9, 2007 U.S. Senators Joseph Biden and Thomas Carper, along with
Congressman Michael Castle, DelDOT Secretary Carolann Wicks, and Judge Jane
Roth, widow of former Senator Roth gathered together along the banks of the
Chesapeake & Delaware Canal to celebrate the dedication of the U. S. Senator
William V. Roth, Jr. Bridge. The bridge, formerly named the C&D Canal Bridge was
re-named by the U.S. Congress in honor of one of Delaware's most beloved and
longest-serving elected officials, the late Senator William V. Roth.
The Chesapeake & Delaware Canal was completed in 1829. The U. S. Senator William
V. Roth, Jr. Bridge was opened to traffic on December 9, 1995 after 1,230 days
of construction. The cable-stayed bridge cost $58 million to construct is 4,650
feet long and features a 750-foot deck surface that crosses the canal. Today,
the bridge has an annual average daily traffic count in excess of 70,000
vehicles.
