Outstanding Project Work for 2002

Enhancement Award
Bridge 9 on Smiths Bridge Road over Brandywine Creek

Bridge 9 on Smiths Bridge Road over Brandywine Creek is an enhancement project which involved replacement of a deteriorated structure with a new structure that was acceptable to the community, while minimizing environmental impacts, and improving safety.

This project included:

  • Complicated analysis of extensive data that was required for a design of truss and arch for the covered bridge.
  • Innovative use of Bongossi, an exotic hardwood that is naturally resistant to rot, decay, and fire.
  • Accommodation to traffic volume through realignment and ‘yield to vehicles on the bridge’ situation.
  • Community involvement that included ‘a blank sheet of paper’ at start of design process and later produced a design that achieved the objectives of both the Department and the community.
