Project Limits:
This project corridor is approximately 2.7 miles in length, and involves Route 1 from Route 24 to 1100 feet north of the Five Points intersection in Lewes.

Project Highlights:
- The purpose of the project is to add a third southbound travel lane and an improved shared use/right turn lane, which will improve safety conditions.
- The project includes a mill and overlay of the northbound and southbound lanes within the project limits.
- Pedestrian safety and mobility will be improved by the extension of a sidewalk along the southbound side of the corridor and inclusion of two pedestrian signals and crosswalks across Route 1. These sidewalks will be placed at Postal Lane and at Rehoboth Outlet Center #1.
- The project is designed to be built in phases to minimize disruption to roadside properties and the traveling public. No detours are proposed along mainline Route 1.
Project Purpose:
Route 1 is a roadway of both regional and local importance. It serves the Delaware beach resorts including Rehoboth Beach, Dewey Beach, Bethany Beach and Fenwick Island, while at the same time serving as an arterial for residents and commuter traffic. Historically, traffic volumes along Route 1 have increased at an average annual rate of 5% per year. This ever-increasing travel demand, including popularity of the beach resorts, and residential and commercial development has resulted in a facility that is nearing, or exceeding its capacity, resulting in major delays and deteriorating safety conditions during summer months.
The purpose of this project is the following:
- To address safety problems on Route 1 as identified in the Year 2000 Highway Safety Improvement Program.
- To address capacity defficiencies on Route 1 in the study section by installing a third southbound lane between Five Points/Route 9 and Route 24.
- To develop the project in a way that is integrated and consistent with other transportation planning initiatives, supports planned economic development and enhances or preserves (minimizing impacts to) environmental resources.
