Project Limits
Project Purpose The Corridor Capacity Preservation Program was established in 1996 by 17 Del. C. 145. The Program was created to preserve the regional function of selected corridors in Delaware. US 13 along with SR 1, US 113 and Route 48 were included in the Program in 1997. The Program approach on US 13 is to improve local streets, construct service roads and limit new access in rural areas along the corridor. In doing so, the function of US 13 can be restored to one of regional nature and new/improved local roadways would accommodate local traffic. As part of the Corridor Capacity Preservation Program (CCPP), the Bridgeville working group looked at various improvements for the US 13 and DE 404 intersection while finalizing the concept plan for the US 13 Corridor Plan in the Town of Bridgeville. Secondary impacts associated with this improvement were evaluated and addressed. There has been pressure in this area of Bridgeville for development and the area surrounding the intersection is a designated growth area. The proposed service roads are necessary to accommodate additional traffic generated by ongoing and proposed developments along US 13. This location was listed in 1998 and 2001 Highway Safety Improvement Program as a site having a high rate of accidents. Between 1994 and 1996, there were 47 accidents at the intersection. Between 1997 and 1999, there were 36 accidents at the intersection. Many of these accidents were attributed to the skew angles that existing DE 404 intersects US 13. As part of the proposed improvements of this project, DE 404 will be realigned to intersect US 13 at a perpendicular angle. The proposed improvements will also include additional lanes through the intersection, turn lanes and will improve both traffic flow and safety.
