Milton -- The Department of Transportation (DelDOT) and the historic community of Milton, came together today to celebrate the completion of much-needed improvements along one of its main roadways. The event was held street side at H.O. Brittingham Elementary School on Mulberry Street with residents, school children, and local officials on hand.

Improvements to Mulberry Street in Milton included placing curbing and sidewalks for pedestrian access along both sides of the street from Wagamon's Pond to Route 16, as well as the installation of a new drainage system and the relocation of water lines. The majority of Mulberry Street previously had no curbs or sidewalks. The project also includes a complete hotmix overlay of the existing roadway scheduled to be complete by Friday, November 10, weather permitting.

Joe Cantalupo, Assistant Director of Planning for DelDOT, explains, "DelDOT has enjoyed working with the residents to come up with a project that would fit the needs of the community for years to come. These improvements, especially the sidewalks for pedestrians, make it safer for children to walk to school and allow the community to stay connected."

The project was initiated by the community, who worked with DelDOT via a Community Working Group to evaluate the needs of the area. DelDOT agreed with the community that improvements needed to be made in order for the close-knit community to remain connected and remain a vital part of Milton. The project was funded through DelDOT's Transportation Enhancement Program (T.E. Program), which allows for the development and implementation of a variety of non-traditional projects that highlight cultural, aesthetic, and environmental aspects of the transportation system.

Daisy Construction Company, Inc., a New-Castle based firm, will finish the $2.4 million project by Friday, November 10 with a pavement overlay.
