Highlights Adopt-A-Highway Program

| Secretary Carolann Wicks officially kicks off statewide Anti-Litter Awareness Campaign at the Division of Motor Vehicles Office in Dover. |
Dover --
The Department of Transportation in conjunction with the Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) announces the start of it's Retro Anti-Litter Awareness Campaign this week. Today, Secretary Carolann Wicks joined by Acting DMV Director Jack Eanes kicked off the timeless campaign with comments at the Dover DMV Office located off Bay Road in Dover. The campaign is being initiated to remind Delaware motorists (and all others) about the impact litter has on our state, and to encourage motorists to properly dispose of litter when in their vehicle.
At the heart of the campaign is a retro 1955 billboard advertisement which depicts the message "Don't Be A Litterbug. . . Keep Delaware Beautiful." DelDOT, wanting to bring the retro message back, uniquely edited the 1955 billboard to include a 2007 look. However as the display poster notes, "50 Years Later The Message Is Still The Same."
The poster, which will attract motorist's attention, will be on display in the entryway of each of the four DMV locations throughout the state, along with free car litterbags during the campaign.
Secretary Wicks noted, "Today we have more people littering on more roadways. You don't have to do the math to see that despite our increased efforts, Delaware has more litter today than ever in its history."
This retro campaign is not an afterthought, but rather a commitment to keeping Delaware clean and beautiful. For example, our Adopt-A-Highway Program has over 680 active groups cleaning over 1,300 miles of roads in Delaware, and includes an in-school litter education program. Also, on September 29, 2007, DelDOT is hosting its 3rd Annual "Imagine A Litter-Free Delaware" Clean Up Day.
Persons interested in participating in either the Adopt-A-Highway Program or the Clean Up Day event, should contact the Office of Public Relations at (302) 760-2080, or look in the Community Programs and Services Section of DelDOT's Web site at www.deldot.gov.
