Georgetown -- The Department of Transportation (DelDOT) announces that Daisy Construction Company Inc. is the low bidder for the Town of Georgetown's Market Street Improvement Project. For this project, the Newport-based firm submitted a bid of $434,387.72, the lowest of three bids received. The streetscape enhancements will include construction of textured sidewalks, curbing, ADA ramps, pedestrian lighting and minor landscaping along East Market Street between King Street and the railroad tracks, within the Town of Georgetown. New Traffic Signal On Savannah Road

Lewes -- The Department of Transportation (DelDOT) announces that the new traffic signal on Savannah Road at the back entrance to Cape Henlopen High School (Dover Street) will be put into initial operation in late August and will become fully operational before school begins. The purpose of the signal is to control traffic on Savannah Road and traffic entering/exiting the school during peak times. Once put into service the signal will operate in a flash mode (yellow for Savannah Road motorists and red for those exiting the school) for a minimum of 72 hours. [More]

Wilmington -- A new report, released by the American Public Transportation Association on August 8, 2010, which surveys current research has found that people who live in communities with high-quality public transportation drive less, exercise more, live longer, and are generally healthier than residents of communities that lack quality public transit. Evaluating Public Transportation Health Benefits, a study conducted for APTA by Todd Litman of the Victoria Transport Policy Institute aggregates the findings of several recent studies and concludes that people living in transit-oriented smart growth communities enjoy several health benefits, not seen in other communities, including residents drive less, exposing them to a lower risk of fatal vehicle accidents. Such communities also have less pollution, because public transportation produces far less emissions per passenger mile than private automobiles. [More]
