US 113 @ Alms House Road/Speedway Road and US 113 Kruger Road/Wood Branch Road Safety Improvements
The limits of this project include the intersection of US 113 @ Alms House Road/Speedway Road and the intersection of US 113 @ Kruger Road/Wood Branch Road US 113 Kruger Aerial Image
The two intersections were identified as part of DelDOT's 2008 Hazard Elimination Program as having high crash rates. The locations were studied and recommendations were made to address crashes at the intersection. Interim measures were installed in October 2013 and again in October 2014.
Since the beginning of the DelDOT's study of these two intersections, various requests for signalization were made by the general public including providing a signal at one or the other intersection, both intersections or one signal at a combined intersection. Through recent modified studies, it was determined initially to restrict crossing and turning movements at the Kruger Road/Wood Branch Road intersection (implemented in October 2013) to quickly address a continued angle crash problem Median Closure Signing and Striping Plan.
In October 2014, restrictions were installed at the Speedway Road/Alms House Road intersection to further reduce crashes and then additional restrictions were placed in December 2014 NB Left Closure Signing and Striping Plan.
Given continued concerns from the community and continued requests for a traffic signal at one of the study intersections, further analysis and public involvement occurred to determine the appropriate long-term solution to address traffic safety and operational needs. Based on the comments received at the public workshop and during the official comment period, DelDOT proceeded with the design and implementation of Full Traffic Signal at US 113 at Kruger Road/Wood Branch Road (Option 1). Specifically, the improvements will include the installation of a full traffic signal (i.e., permitting all US 113 and side-street turning and through movements) at the US 113 at Kruger Road/Wood Branch Road intersection and a full median crossover closure at Alms House Road/Speedway Road.
