Project Limits:

Approx. 200-feet north of Bridge 1-111 and 200-feet south of Bridge 1-599 along Benge Road.

Project Need:

Bridges 1-111 and 1-599 are both structurally deficient. Bridge 1-111 is a 90-foot single span concrete girder structure over the Red Clay Creek. Significant deterioration is occurring to the deck and is need of repair to maintain the remaining structures longevity. Bridge 1-599 is a 16-foot culvert spanning over the Mill Race. Scour has caused undermining of the structures footing and is need of repair. Both bridges have been identified as in need of work by the Pontis Bridge Management System.

Project Overview:

This project involves performing rehabilitation work on both structures. The work for Bridge 1-111 includes replacing the concrete deck, sidewalk, barriers and joints. Minor repair work will be completed on the substructure and roadway approaches. Work for Bridge 1-599 includes placing a concrete slab between the existing footers and adding rip-rap at the inlet and outlet of the culvert. Rehabilitation work will be performed on both bridges simultaneously during a full road closure.

Construction work will begin with a full closure of Benge Road in February 2018 and remain for approximately 90 days.

Please note that the proposed Paper Mill Trail Construction project, administered by Delaware State Parks, is separate from DelDOT's bridge rehabilitation project. Delaware State Parks anticipates construction of the trail to begin in January 2018 and finish in early summer 2018. Trail construction does not require a full closure of Benge Road.
