Interim Improvements 2008
DelDOT delivered interim improvements to SR26 and Old Mill Road in Fall, 2008. Specifically, DelDOT upgraded traffic signals, added pedestrian facilities on the north/south movement and added sidewalks from the intersection to the shopping area.
Interim Improvements 2005
DelDOT delivered interim improvements to Central Avenue and West Avenue at SR26 by Memorial Day, 2005. A pubic workshop was held in Summer, 2010. At that time, DelDOT provided the final construction plans and project schedule to the public.
Please Note: As of 10/12/2016, this project has been completed.
Project Limits:
The project limits stretch from 400 feet west of Saint Georges Church in Clarksville to just west of Glen Drive in Bethany Beach.
Project Need
The need for improvements to SR26 (Atlantic Avenue) stems from record growth through the 1990's and early 2000's, which has resulted in traffic congestion, safety concerns, and operational issues. The proposed improvements are the result of a DelDOT Planning study conducted from 1999 to 2001, recommendations received from the public at numerous public workshops, and advisory committee meetings.
Project Schedule:
Final Construction Plans - Fall 2012
Right-of-Way Acquisition - February 2009 to February 2013
Actual Construction Start Date - January 6, 2014
Actual Substantial Completion Date – October 12, 2016
Project Contractor:
George & Lynch, Inc
Project Cost:
The current estimate is $35,000,000.
Project Overview:
This project will make improvements to SR26, Atlantic Avenue. The existing roadway will be widened to provide one eleven (11) foot travel lane in each direction with five (5) foot shoulders which will be striped as bike lanes. A 12 foot shared center left turn lane will be included through the length of the project. Separate right turn lanes and left turn lanes will be added at intersections. Sidewalks and closed drainage will be provided for much of the roadway segments through Ocean View and Millville. The work will make improvements that accommodate the area's multi-modal transportation needs. DelDOT and its SR26 Project Team will continue to work with neighborhood and community representatives, schools, local government leaders, concerned citizens, federal and state environmental and cultural resource agencies, and others to develop plans that meet the diverse needs of the community.
