Project Limits

  • SR 18 from SR 404 southeast of Bridgeville to The Circle in Georgetown
  • SR 404 from The Circle in Georgetown to SR 1/Five Points

Project Need

The study would unbraid SR 18 and SR 404, as well as US Route 9 (US 9) and SR 404, eliminating overlapping route designations and providing motorists with a simpler and more intuitive highway network. Currently, portions of these routes share the same roadway while retaining multiple route designations. These concurrent designations create route redundancy and can contribute to driver confusion, particularly for motorists who are unfamiliar with the area. They also result in additional route signage without providing a corresponding navigational benefit.

Project Overview

Under the proposed routing:

  • SR 18 would retain its current western terminus at the Maryland state line to a new eastern terminus at its intersection with SR 404 (Seashore Highway), southeast of Bridgeville.
  • SR 404 would also retain its current western terminus at the Maryland state line and would terminate to the east at its intersection with US 9 (Market Street) at The Circle in Georgetown.
  • US 9 would remain unchanged.

The project will eliminate the SR 18/SR 404 and US 9/SR 404 concurrent designations and provide motorists with clearer and more consistent route guidance. Importantly, the project will not alter the physical roadway network or change motorists' ability to travel along these corridors. It would only change how portions of the existing roadway network are designated and signed.

Project Timeline

  • Study to be completed in early 2027
  • Affected signing to be removed in late 2027
