Project Limits:
W Lea Boulevard (N502) between Miller Road (N217) and N Washington Street (N43), Wilmington, New Castle County,Delaware
Project Need:
DelDOT Traffic Studies Group received concerns related to speeding and safety on W Lea Boulevard (N502). Traffic studies revealed that vehicles are traveling above the posted speed limit, and angle crashes are the most common type of crash along the corridor. To increase compliance of the speed limit and enhance safety, a roadway reconfiguration, also known as a road diet, is being considered. Specifically, the project would reconfigure the corridor to maintain one lane in each direction with a two-way left-turn lane in the center and bike lanes on each side of the roadway. A road diet is expected to have many safety benefits including providing a designated space for left-turns to/from W Lea Boulevard, reducing the pedestrian crossing distance, and incorporating a zone designated for bicycles.
Overview:
The purpose of the project is to improve safety and quality of life for the traveling public and residents of Lea Boulevard (N502) by incorporating a road diet along the corridor. The project consists of restriping the existing roadway to provide one lane in each direction, one two-way left turn lane, and bike lanes on each side of the roadway. Any existing left-turn storage at signalized intersections will be maintained.
