About Us
What We Do
Safe, equitable, and walkable transportation is essential to the quality of life, health, public safety, and economic success of any community. In 2023, the Delaware General Assembly directed DelDOT to administer the Delaware Pedestrian Council to assist in the goal of eliminating pedestrian fatalities and make walking a safe, convenient, efficient, and comfortable means of transportation in Delaware.
The Pedestrian Council’s directives are to advise on gaps in the system of pedestrian networks to create a system of sidewalks and pathways that is continuous and interconnected, increase accessibility for all, implement DelDOT’s Sidewalk and Multi-use Path Maintenance Policy and the Statewide Pedestrian Action Plan, make transit access a more viable option for all Delaware residents, develop strategies for pedestrian safety education and assist with pedestrian safety events and outreach initiatives, provide pedestrian safety advice to other appropriate agencies or municipalities, and review circumstances of Delaware pedestrian fatalities, identify trends, and make safety recommendations. The Council submits an annual report of its activities and recommendations to the Governor and General Assembly that will be publicly shared when available.
Who We Are
The Council is comprised of 17 voting members including several state agency representatives, a representative from each County, the City of Wilmington, the League of Local Governments, and six Delaware citizens with knowledge of pedestrian matters appointed by the Governor including three who have a physical disability, developmental disability, or visual impairment, and one who represents the business community in the State. Appointed members serve for two years. The Council also selects a chair for a two-year term and meets at least four times per calendar year. The Council may form subcommittees to assist in completion of the Council’s duties, they meet outside regular council meetings and may include members of the public or individuals from another state agency or nongovernmental organization. A subcommittee member is not required to be a Council member.
