Stormwater Management

Stormwater System Inventory, Inspection and Maintenance

As part of its NPDES program, DelDOT locates, inventories, and performs maintenance inspections of all stormwater system components (inlets, outfalls, pipes, manholes, swales, etc.). The location of each system component is recorded with a global positioning system (GPS) and added to DelDOT’s NPDES drainage system database and map. Annually, DelDOT inspects 20% of its infrastructure resulting in 100% coverage over a 5-year cycle.

At the initial field inspection, a marker that reads “ONLY RAIN DOWN THE STORM DRAIN” is affixed in a visible location at each drainage inlet. These markers serve as a reminder to everyone that what we put on the land eventually ends up in our waterways

Regular inventory, inspection, and maintenance of the storm sewer system is a high priority for DelDOT. Keeping all components in good repair is essential for preventing floods and protecting water quality.
